“F” Is For Father

F is for Father, but not just any father – perhaps the greatest father that ever walked the planet.

I know its a cliché, all children think that their parents are the best in the world (and perhaps during the younger years even think they are the worst) but its true. Time Magazine can call off the search for I officially do have the best father in the world.

First things first, I don’t actually call him ‘father’, after all I’m not a child of the 1950’s, I call him ‘dad’. However as you will know ‘D’ was used for David and this was the only way I could make it work. Therefore from now on I shall refer to him as ‘dad’, as I do at home.

So why is my dad the best dad in the world? Well his kindness knows no bounds. “But aren’t all fathers kind?” I hear you ask, well no, most are, and just as some are and some aren’t, there are different levels of kindness that a father has, and mine is up there right at the top.

The reason I say this with such strong conviction is that for the 8564 days I have been on this planet, for the 7408 days my brother David has been here, and even for the 6124 days my sister has graced this land with her presence, my father has put us first each and every one of those days.

Together with my mother they have worked ever so hard to provide all three of us with the best start in life we could possibly have, even to the extent that they have by supporting me through 3 university degrees (with a Masters possibly on the horizon).

As with David I have many fond memories of spending time with my Father. These include:

    • Going to a beach one winter for a walk, just the two of us, my feet getting soaked and rather than travel home in cold wet shoes, he bought me a new pair with new socks.
    • Him taking me to the arcade after school every Friday, I think it was called Arcadia.
    • Having deep meaningful conversations either on the way to Manchester or on the way to Leeds as we travel across the M62 with my stuff for the holidays.

Of course the memories which I have will no doubt fade with time, but the one thing which won’t is my love and respect that I have for him.

A picture of dad and I when we were both younger. I can only hope that If/when I am a father, I manage to be half the father dad was to us.

Yes I know I call him Dad, but this is the only way I could make it work, so 'F' is now for 'Father'
