They say that there are only two certainties in life, death and taxes, however coupled with those two things are the fact that each and every day we will get older.
Its a fact that not many of us like, especially when we have enjoyed our childhood, we want to remain in that period of time where the biggest worry is that we are going to get fed a vegetable we don’t like for dinner.
As we get older, the worries get bigger. We start to worry about homework (and then quickly discover the excuse ‘I’ve forgotten my book’), then worry about going to high school (where the aforementioned excuse will no longer work).
We then start to learn how to drive, and the worry that if you don’t drive safely there is the real possibility that you (or someone else) may not make it home that evening.
At university the work is yet another worry, coupled with the fact of living away from home. Setting up direct debits to pay bills, making sure there is food in the fridge, not to mention making sure that the food is cooked are just some of the things that we need not have to worry about when we were younger.
After university the working world is yet another worry. Finding someone to work for, or work with, preferably in a job that you enjoy doing is one challenge, but then when you factor in making sure you have enough money at the end of the month to pay bills (and hopefully have a life outside of work) – its just one worry after another.
The truth is that I think when you look at the world like that, we would all prefer to be young forever. However if we remained like that we would never achieve one thing the feeling of success and satisfaction that came with it.
If we remained young we would never have got that great feeling of passing an exam/driving test or getting a great mark in an exam, and we would never get the warm feeling that comes with knowing that you have made an impact at work that day.
So on balance, would staying young forever be a good thing? Well you would have everything done for you, but equally you would not have any responsibility or purpose in life – something which I think is quite a draw back to remaining forever young!
